Does the idea of watching your favorite netflix show at 150% speed sound appealing to you? If so, film makers do not agree.
The latest feature Netflix is testing allows just that. You will be able to “speed watch” any movie or show in their library. Currently the feature is only available to a hand full of Android mobile users.
Judd Apatow (Director of Love, Freaks and Geeks etc.) was one of many film developers who do not approve of the tests.
Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul, who recently starred in El Camino, also bashed Netflix for the move in his own tweet.
Netflix is currently defending the tests and have said that they are taking creative concerns into account. Keela Robison, vice president of Netflix, wrote in a blog post: “This last test has generated a fair amount of feedback – both for and against. Given the questions being raised, I wanted to share more details about what’s happening … This is a mobile-only test and gives people the ability to vary the speed at which they watch on phones or tablets. It’s a feature that has long been available on DVD players — and has been frequently requested by our members. For example, people looking to rewatch their favorite scene or wanting to go slower because it’s a foreign language title. We’ve been sensitive to creator concerns and haven’t included bigger screens, in particular TVs, in this test. We have no plans to roll any of these tests out in the short term. And whether we introduce these features for everyone at some point will depend on the feedback we receive.”
