Diablo 4’s Loot system explained

The new loot system in Diablo 4 is going to have the old Diablo 2 style loot system at its core but with a few slight adjustments and enhancements. Runewords are returning in place of Diablo 3’s Gem system and are going to make for really complex build customization.

There is also going to be a new rarity tier called “exotics”. These will add an ultra-rare tier of items to Diablo 2’s old system.

Here is a glimpse into the tiers.

Diablo 4 loot tier’s

There is the normal Diablo white->Blue->Yellow progression and then set’s are on the same level as legendary items. This is in contrast to Diablo 3 where sets kind of dominate.

Above the regular sets and legendaries we have Ancient versions, which are rarer improved versions of their non-ancient counterparts.

After that we have Mythic’s, which you can only wear one of at a time. These come with 4 seemingly random legendary stats, we aren’t sure if these are pulled from existing legendary stats or if they are mythic only stats.

Runewords are the last thing we will go over. You can place a rune in an item and gain it’s effect, just like a gem. Assuming they incorporate the full system from Diablo 2, you will be able to arrange multiple runes in one piece of gear spelling out a “word” and causing the piece of gear to turn into a wildly different piece of gear that should rival sets and legendaries.

We will have to see what they do in the end but it sounds promising!
